A month or two ago we were presented with the challenge of converting an existing distribution system in a residential block from a Single Wire IRS system into an all singing & dancing IRS+ (Sky+ / Sky HD Compatible) system without disturbing the existing décor / infrastructure.
A bit of head-scratching and a few phone-calls later and we had a solution in the form of the new breed of Satellite Channel Routing Multi-switches which, via a bit of ‘magic’ at the receiver end, allow two lots of signals to be routed down a single cable, then separated at the receiver by means of a simple splitter.
Once the relevant permits to work and suitable Health & Safety criteria had been satisfied (Site Specific Risk Assessments and Method Statements), a suitable location for the Dish and Aerials was located on the exterior of the existing lift motor room (Easier said than done given the restrictions on the roof-space!)
From here it was a case of routing new trunk feeds through the existing risers and replacing the old analogue multi-switches with shiny new ‘SCR’ units.
After re-balancing the system to ensure efficient distribution of the signals tests were carried out in the dwellings to confirm all was well and the required splitter units fitted.
The ability to retro-fit this equipment has provided our client with a substantial saving compared to having a complete new 2-wire system fitted and with little disturbance to the existing cable infrastructure, so its a win-win situation all round!
